2001: American Odyssey On the morning of September 2, 2001, I hefted my dog Ike and my tired body into my pint-sized RV in Sun City, Arizona, and began a journey around America. Only a few weeks earlier, my mother had died after a long and courageous battle with cancer. As I departed on that hot desert morning, exhausted from many months of caregiving, I felt a glimmer of hope that I might find personal peace on the highway. Little did I know then that my journey would not only give me a closeup view of a changed Dan; only nine days later, I would also begin to see a unique view of a profoundly changed America. Someday, when my work on this site is complete, I will present a full recounting of the emotion and insights I experienced on my 20,000-mile, 37-state American odyssey. |
